The Wines

Appellation “Coteaux du Languedoc - Pic Saint Loup”

The Pic Saint Loup terroir is the most northerly vineyard in the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation area. It has a unique micro-climate.

Although only some twenty kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, its situation is already at an average altitude of 150 metres, in the heart of the garrigue and in the first foothills of the Cévennes.

The diurnal temperature is practically as high as that on the coast, reaching 40° C at the end of July and early in August. The nocturnal temperature, on the other hand, is much lower – from mid-August in particular it is not rare to see temperatures 5 or 6° lower than on the coast.

Because of this cooler micro-climate, marked by large thermal variations, the grape ripening cycle is longer here than in other Languedoc vineyards. To give you an example of this, it is not rare for Syrah to be harvested at the beginning of October, as in the case of the northern Côtes du Rhône wines. The micro-climate gives the Pic Saint Loup wines a freshness and finesse that are not found anywhere else in the Languedoc wine area.

Subject to respecting certain more specific production conditions than those of Coteaux du Languedoc, the red and rosé wines of Pic Saint Loup can be sold under the appellation “Coteaux du Languedoc” followed by the name “Pic Saint Loup”. White wines, on the other hand, are only sold under the “Coteaux du Languedoc” appellation. Site: Appellation Coteaux du Languedoc and Syndicat Pic Saint Loup
